Painting This Weekend?

Thinking about painting your home? While some might enjoy the process of designing and redecorating, many will agree that picking a paint color is a daunting task. First, you must decide on a color family. Then, you’re faced with a myriad of options within that family, and before you know it, you’re sweating the perfect hue. Let’s not forget that colors can actually affect your mood!

Some things you might want to ask yourself when faced with this task:

  • What look are you going for?
  • Are you drawn to cool or warm tones?
  • How much and what kind of light shines in the room you want to paint?
  • How do you want to feel in that room?
  • What purpose does that space serve?
  • Are you attempting to make the room feel larger (or smaller)?

If you’re planning on selling your home but don’t intend to stage it, consider painting/repainting in soft, neutral shades. This will provide a blank canvas for potential buyers to envision their own style.

Extra tip from Dr. Mary Gregerson, the president of the American Psychological Association’s Society for Environment, Population, and Conservation Psychology: “Incandescent lighting may give lighter colors a brown or orange cast while making dark colors even darker.” (Architectural Digest)
